Defense and Civilian Agency Solutions

The ability to measure performance on multiple projects is absolutely essential for any program or project manager working within the federal government. Reliably reporting key performance indicators across the portfolio of projects necessary to meet an agency’s goals and objectives is not only mandated by the federal government, but it also provides managers with a method of determining whether or not a project will ultimately be successful. The only way to achieve this methodology is to employ the discipline of earned value management (EVM).

With roots dating back to the Department of Defense in the 1960s, EVM has blossomed into a widely used project management discipline in the public sector, due in no small part to Office of Management and Budget (OMB) directives that mandate its use by civilian agencies. With EVM, project managers are able to generate progress reports that help them evaluate actual performance against initial baselines. Ultimately, EVM functions as an early warning system that identifies potential problems while there is still time to correct them.
